1972年马科斯独裁政权宣布实行军事戒严法,开创了菲律宾最血腥的时代,数以千计的人被逮捕、拘禁,遭受酷刑甚至“被失踪”。前后在菲国掌权20多年,直至1986年被推翻政权。而在2016年的菲律宾全国选举中,马科斯之子小马科斯竞选菲律宾副总统,由于菲律宾学校教科书中马科斯政权的内容未被提及,40%的选民对戒严法一无所知。
用当时的幸存者、记者来对戒严令时代的想法进行了采访,在接受采访时,采访者开始自我介绍,并透露他们是戒严令的幸存者,同时讲述了他们在马科斯的戒严令期间所遭受的不公正的监禁、酷刑等可怕经历。这段视频在选举前一周发布,并在上传当天获得超过100万次访问量。它被各种新闻媒体报道,一周内访问量高达500万人次。此后,小马科斯的支持率持续下降,小马科斯最终以最微弱的差距输掉了这场比赛。更重要的是,在2016年菲律宾参议院教育部门宣布了一项新的课程,以反映戒严令残虐行为。
